Online File Sharing, Backup and Synchronization

One of the most interesting discussions I have with people regarding file storage is the talk of Cloud Storage and File Sharing. Or put plainly, storing and sharing critical files online.

At my workplace, Newport Digital, we make extensive use of Dropbox. Free accounts start with 2gb of storage, and it is cross-platform compatible. It works on Mac, Windows, Linux and devices like Iphone, Ipad and Android enabled phones and tablets.

This is extremely useful if you wish to share files with other people. Basically you share the folder through Dropbox and then invite people to view the folder. The people you invite can then install the software that allows them to add or edit files in that folder. When a file is added or changed you are notified and the file is synchronized with the shared folder on your computer.

The Dropbox tool is fantastic for businesses that need to share large files with clients or their sales team and sending the files via email is just not a viable option. The added benefit is if you crash your hard drive all you files in the Dropbox folder are safely stored online.
